First Nations Bannock Restaurant in Canada

We’ve gone through crucial times as bannock is still making its way in the restaurant world. We first set up as a bannock stand in Westbank, BC, years ago. We experienced success in our little venture, and sought feedback from our customers about opening a First Nations restaurant. What is a First Nations restaurant? If you have been to a Mexican restaurant, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, etc., there are now First Nations restaurants opening up across Canada!

A little inspiration of Dessert Bannock

Sharon Bond-Hogg, of Kekuli Cafe loves cooking! A pinch of this, a dash of that, a palm of this and an eyeball of that, and some good old fashioned Inspiration, makes for some yummy desserts and bannock treats at Kekuli Cafe! Here we have a Berry Bannock Pudding recipe that we make at Kekuli Cafe, inspired by Dolly Watts, who is now retired on the Island. I wish I would have met her years ago, when I was researching my business plan and ideas, because I was scared to open my restaurant! How would this be perceived? Well, all good, and all said and done! Two restaurants and more to come! So here is a recipe video of our Berry Bannock pudding! Enjoy! Berry Bannock...

Don’t Panic…We are ready to Franchise!

Don’t Panic…We are ready to Franchise!

The day we opened our doors on September 12, 2009, people were flocking into the doors, carrying out our humble boxes of Bannock, and the biggest question we were asked, and still to this day…”Are you a Franchise?” I always said, “Our dream is to franchise, and here we are almost 7 years later, a member of the Canadian Franchise Association. We’ve attended 2 franchise shows in BC and Alberta and it’s been the best experience in the world of business. Build it & they will come! Over the years of operating Kekuli Cafe, our goal was to hone in on the menu and our Brand. We needed the menu to reflect, what we knew, as consumers wanted,  the way the world is headed towards fresh, fast and healthy options. Kekuli Cafe, “Don’t Panic…We Have Bannock”! est. 2009 Westbank BC, & second location August 1, 2014 in Merritt BC.  The destination of choice for fresh, healthy and fast-casual, quick serve cafe. We may be new to Franchise world, but we’ve made the headways in the world of Indigenous Food and creating a way to make it fun, fresh & even healthy! We’ve been ahead of the fast food chain, in some areas, that surprise us, when other chains have new food or drinks come out, we’ve already been there and done that! Both our locations have been serving alcohol as a coffee shop for almost 2 years, and other businesses are following our footsteps. We have the drive to succeed, the perseverance to never give-up and the passion for people! Our goal is to make this the best business in Canada...
MooseMeat & Marmalade & Bannock

MooseMeat & Marmalade & Bannock

Day with MooseMeat & Marmalade Don’t Panic…But how tasty would MooseMeat, Marmalade and Bannock be? #YUMMM Filming an episode of the show, Moose Meat & Marmalade, with Art Napoleon and the London Chef, Dan Hayes, at Kekuli Cafe Westbank. This will be a fantastic episode of their wild elk hunt and foraging of delicious wild asparagus and morel mushrooms. Check out Season 2, Episode 10 for this amazing episode with these 2 great guys! Art and Dan,  went hunting with Jacob and Charles Kruger of the Penticton Indian Band. http://aptn.ca/moosemeatandmarmalade/video/season-2/ Little did I know, how to clean a mushroom. Art showed me the magic of cleaning a mushroom, seems easy and looked like a nice mushroom. So, I cut one up myself, at home…sliced it right down the middle and it falls open slightly and out crawls a creepy bug! UGH! Ya I don’t think I will be foraging any wild mushrooms, thanks! But they sure were tasty with Wild Elk Steak & Asparagus. Since moving back to my hometown of Merritt BC, I’ve had the fun of picking wild asparagus and other great traditional plants that our ancestors survived off, hundreds of years ago and even today they still harvest their medicines and plants. So if you want to learn more about traditional foods in North America, watch MooseMeat & Marmalade and their wild foraging in the Okanagan! Shall be a great episode for sure!  ...

Bannock & Coffee Buzz Happy 2016

There’s a Bannock Buzz out there….Whats New? Opening 7 days a week! Did you know we are a Coffee Shop with light breakfast and awesome homemade lunches? We do cater and take-out as well!          Thank you for supporting our decision last year for helping our staff have that one day for themselves. We actually retained employees, got to know our employees and the things they like to do.  All of these things we learned, we were also told, why don’t you open 7 days week, because there are people out there who need the hours and Sundays are a day, where some people, like students can actually work, to support their going back to school. So many reasons, why we decided to open Sundays. There are times when people emailed us, travelling through town, and were disappointed, because it was their only day coming through, until next year.  We have kept our staff’s desired availability in mind, and ensure they get their needed time off. Thank you for your support and keeping Kekuli Cafe…”Don’t Panic…We Have Bannock”® . If you haven’t checked out Kekuli Cafe yet…. This is the time to try it out!
